How does one tell a young woman, scarred and near death after a horrendous childbirth, that she should not allow a man to use a condom, or that should she be raped again, her young body must endure another life-threatening birth? How do you tell an AIDs sufferer that if you use a condom it could aggravate the spread of the disease?

Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Africa in the past week made headlines for criticising health agencies which resorted to abortion for medical reasons or ''maternal health care'' and reaffirming the Catholic denunciation of the use of condoms, in a continent where AIDs is in epidemic proportions.

While the Catholic Church has a perfect right to exhort people to live moral lives according to its own theology, it must surely have to consider the dire circumstances which plague our African neighbours. Indeed, the Catholic Church provides more than a third of health care in undeveloped countries. Surely those on the ground must be faced with the reality that out of the 33million people in the world infected with HIV/AIDS, 27 million are African. A reality that has led to more than 25 million people dying on the continent since AIDS emerged.

The Pope's insistence that the way to confront HIV and AIDS was through sexual monogamy provoked a furious response from AIDS campaigners. To follow those comments with criticism of nations which have signed an African Union agreement that abortion should be legal after rape or incest, or when the mother's life is endangered, seem provocatively unsympathetic. Nearly 600,000 teenage and adult women die each year, particularly in Africa, from postpartum haemorrhage and other childbirth complications. And many more women are suffering terrible childbirth injuries that leave them scarred, disabled, and in some cases ostracised from their communities for life.

The Pope should be applauded for his condemnation of sexual violence against women, but to counter that with a moratorium on a means to ease suffering because of such violence, will challenge those at the frontline of African women's health.

Wonderful images and a very good message hon. One of the things I really love about your gallery, aside from the amazing artwork, is the descriptions and information you include along with a piece. It really adds so much more dimension and depth of interest to be able to see what it is that inspired your work. :)
